Honeycomb Seals

To reduce air flow leakage in low pressure turbines, state-of-the-art metallic honeycomb seals are brazed onto the engine shrouds. This improves efficiency while reducing fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions. As clearance are reduced, air between turbine components is minimized and potential engine damage resulting from rotational eccentricities is mitigated.

High-temperature braze filler metals from Metco Joining & Cladding withstand the operating temperature of the engine and are the ideal solution to braze the honeycomb structures to the seal. Their composition is designed according to operating parameters and component braze processing requirements to ensure stable operation up to 950 °C (1740 °F). Metco Joining & Cladding also offers materials designed for standard and filled honeycomb needs. Thus, customers can rely on us for the complete honeycomb requirements, whether for new parts or repair of existing parts.

Product Forms Designed for Efficient Production

All Metco Joining & Cladding braze filler metals can be provided as dry gas atomized powders, in paste form or as custom braze tape. For honeycomb seals, braze tape is often preferred. While the customer specifies the width and thickness, the tape can also be supplied with no adhesive or adhesive on one or both sides for convenient placement on the shroud. This makes it much easier and more efficient to place the tape and the honeycomb seal for a reliable and consistent end result.
