Labyrinth Seal

Gas turbines for power generation and industrial applications employ labyrinth seals to improve gas path efficiency. These seals generally have a very complex geometry and are both difficult and costly to produce. Over time, the teeth can become damaged as a result of unintentional rubs against honeycomb or other abradable surfaces, thereby reducing their effectiveness.

Repair of these expensive components via laser cladding

Metco Joining & Cladding’s laser cladding service centers can repair costly labyrinth seals by rebuilding the seal teeth:

  • Seal teeth to be rebuilt are pre-machined by the customer
  • The seal is inspected by our service center and a suitable repair strategy developed, including the material to be used for the repair
  • Programming and final program adjustments are implemented
  • Restore damaged areas using laser cladding
  • Post inspection before being returned to the customer for final machining
